Diving can be one of the most exciting and rewarding activities you will ever experience. However, like most exciting activities, there are rules and procedures you must follow. Proper training is crucial to minimize risk and maximize enjoyment. Breathing in an underwater environment can be dangerous, or even deadly, if you don’t know the rules or if you chose to ignore them.

Brownie’s provides Online Training with the purchase of each recreational hookah system. At Brownie’s, we want all our customers to be as educated and as safe as possible while in the water. We provide this training program at no additional cost with each system to make learning easy, convenient and fun!

The program is an interactive, web-based learning course designed to teach you how to properly and safely use your hookah system. It is broken down into 7 modules each with specific Knowledge Requirements and Objectives. The course utilizes a variety of written explanations, illustrations, photographs and streaming video to clearly convey each subject. Brownie’s makes it easy for students of all ages, including children, to enjoy learning.

Each chapter concludes with a multiple choice quiz to test your understanding and comprehension of the topics covered. Incorrect answers are automatically reviewed and retested. Once you have successfully completed the quiz for that module, you can move on to the next module. After all chapters and quizzes have been completed there is a final comprehensive exam. The final exam follows the same format as the quizzes and may be retaken until it is successfully completed. Upon completion of the Online Training Course a diploma will be shown on-screen, ready to print, frame and proudly display. Hold onto your user name and password so you can access your online course anytime you want to review.
Now you are ready to “get wet” for your in-water portion of training.

You can purchase additional hookah course sign-up codes for friends or family from your local Brownie’s Third Lung dealer.

After the online course is completed, it is time to visit your local dive store for the in-water training phase.

The online course will provide academic knowledge. To complete your training you’ll need to practice that knowledge in a controlled environment before venturing into “open water”. The course website, www.scuba-training.net, includes a list of affiliated independent scuba instructors and professional dive stores by geographic region. You should enroll in an in-water skills course with a professional scuba instructor to review your academic knowledge and practice your water skills. Your instructor will review with you the topics covered in the online course and evaluate your comprehension of the course content. Next, they will arrange a series of dives in a controlled environment (usually a pool) to practice breathing through a regulator and other water skills. He or she will share techniques to improve your efficiency and comfort in the water. By working closely with your instructor, you will become a better (and safer) diver.

As with any activity, you must be in adequate physical condition to participate safely. Check with your doctor before beginning any new activity that may induce stress, including diving. You can download a questionnaire to review with your doctor on our website, www.browniedive.com/training/medical.shtml.

Calling All Dive Stores and Instructors!

Dive Instructors already have extensive knowledge of SCUBA diving principles which is easily adapted to surface supplied air (SSA) diving. An online course is provided (at no charge) to any active status SCUBA instructor(s) to review our dive systems and specific skills related to SSA diving.

Benefits:

  • Spend less time in the classroom and more time in the water teaching valuable skills.
  • Scuba-training.net is a nationally recognized referral program that lists you online as an affiliate so you have students sent right to you.
  • Training materials are tailored specifically for you - You can specify what equipment brands you recommend and sell at your store.
  • Fully Qualified Students - You receive a complete and detailed package, including test scores, study history, strengths and weaknesses and medical history.
  • Convenience - Many times would-be divers are too busy to sign up for a rigidly designed academic course. At scuba-training.net they can log on 24/7 and complete their training at their pace and their schedule. That means more students to teach!

ANSWERS TO FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Hookah diving looks like snorkeling. Do I really need to be trained?

True, Brownie™ diving is almost as easy as snorkeling. The freedom of swimming unencumbered by SCUBA tanks will certainly remind you of snorkeling or free diving. Still, whenever you breathe compressed air while under water, you are operating under a different set of rules. Training is required for everyone who uses the Brownie™ unit. Brownie's™ now includes FREE online hookah training with the purchase of any floating, electric or battery powered hookah system.

There are other options for training including a traditional open water SCUBA certification course or a Recreational Hookah Diver course . The latter course was specifically designed for Recreational Surface Supplied Air Diving through the joint efforts of both Brownie's Third Lung™ and the National Association of Underwater Instructors (NAUI). Courses involve about 30 contact hours and can be completed in as few as 5 days depending on available scheduling time for both instructor and students. With proper training and proper maintenance of equipment, hookah diving can be extremely safe. Brownie's Third Lung™ has been accident free since it's inception in 1969.

Rodale's Scuba Diving Magazine sponsors a section on their website filled with "Lessons for Life." This Training & Safety page details incidents that could have been avoided with proper training. If you are in doubt as to whether you should dive without training, please take a look at this site. Your safety is very important to us.

I am already SCUBA certified. Do I still need to take this course?

SCUBA diving and hookah diving have many similarities but there are also some substantial differences. Brownie's highly recommends all divers new to hookah diving complete the online training course. You'll find it a excellent tool to quickly get up to speed on the set-up and function of your new hookah system, as well as a useful review of standard scuba techniques.

If you are already a veteran hookah diving enthusiast, intimately familiar with your system, we encourage you to pass your access code certificate(s) along to a friends or family members that will be diving with you and sharing in the fun. Please remember that all other participants must be physically and mentally capable of engaging in diving related activities. Along with the Training Course Certificate, please pass along the Divers Medical Questionnaire and Guidelines for Recreational Scuba Diver's Physical Examination for review by your fellow divers and their physicians. Click here to download copies of these forms.

Will I get a "certification" after completing the online hookah training course?

You will not receive a "certification" after completing the online hookah training course. You will, however, receive valuable knowledge including rules and procedures that will help keep you safe while diving. Proper training is crucial to minimize risk and maximize enjoyment. Upon completion of the online hookah training course you will receive by email a diploma that is ready to print, frame and proudly display.

Is there a minimum age for hookah diving?

The minimum recommended age to participate in hookah diving is 12 years old. There is no maximum age defined, rather it is defined by physical ability. All participants must be in good physical and mental health. As with any activity, you must be in adequate physical condition to participate safely. Check with your doctor before beginning any new activity that may induce stress, including diving. You can download a questionnaire to review with your doctor at, www.browniedive.com/training/medical.shtml.

Why do I need to go to an instructor and take in-water training?

Although the online hookah training course does a very good job detailing important academic knowledge it is not able to provide valuable in-water instruction. Adcademic knowledge is very different than mastery of skills and techniques while underwater. You will need the close supervision of an instructor in a controlled environment to practice the skills that you first viewed online.

How long will the online training course take me to complete?

The online hookah training course will take roughly 4-6 hours to complete. Many people learn at different rates so it is hard to predict exactly how long you should expect to complete the course. Because of the nature of the course you are able to go online any time of day 24/7 and learn at your own pace. In today's world, many of us find it difficult to take time away from work and family to attend class. The primary advantage of our online system is that you can "attend SSA (Surface Supplied Air) class" in the comfort and convenience of your own home or office. Anytime you have a few minutes, log into our online classroom and work on your lessons, quizzes and reading assignments. Our web-based courses fit into your schedule: you can work on your training at any time of the day or night. Scuba-training.net will log your progress so your work will be saved should you stop and come back later to continue.

Where can I go for my in-water training after I have completed on the online training course?

The course website, www.scuba-training.net, includes a list of affiliated independent scuba instructors and professional dive stores by geographic region.

Since I don't have a printed training manual can I go back later and review the course content?

Absolutely. Hold onto your user name and password so you can access your online course anytime you want to review.
